Mentoring Program

The Association is introducing a Mentoring Programme in 2026 on a pilot basis.  Early career consultants have to navigate a complex professional and organisational environment, locally, regionally, nationally and often internationally, at a time when they are assuming significant additional responsibilities.

Consultants at an advanced stage in their career, retired Consultants and those approaching retirement have a wealth of knowledge, skills and experience that they may be in a position to share with those who are starting out on their career as a newly appointed Consultant.

It is proposed that the IHCA programme will have a non-clinical focus and will be separate and distinct from other programmes currently offered by hospital or mental health service employers.

Mentoring partnerships can be mutually beneficial and rewarding – on both professional and personal levels. Mentors can develop leadership skills and gain a personal sense of satisfaction from knowing that they've helped someone.

Mentees can expand their knowledge and skills, gain valuable advice from a more experienced person, and build their professional networks. And both partners can improve their communication skills, learn new ways of thinking, and, ultimately, advance their careers.

If you are a newly appointed Consultant and wish to be considered for the pilot, please send an expression of interest to info@ihca.ie. Places will be limited in the early introductory stage of this programme.

Similarly, if you would like to get involved as a mentor, please express your interest to info@ihca.ie. Training and guidance documents will be provided.
