The IHCA changed the Rules of the Association in 2018 to offer Associate Membership for doctors who are at an advanced stage in their training but have not yet been appointed to a Consultant post. There is currently no membership fee for Associate Membership.

Associate membership is open to doctors who have not yet been appointed to a Consultant post and who:

  • Hold or have previously held enrolment on the Irish Medical Register or Irish Dental Register; and
  • Have commenced in or completed the final two years of specialist training; or
  • Have received a Certificate of Satisfactory Completion of Specialist Training from an Irish Postgraduate Medical Training Body.

An Associate Member is eligible to receive such advice, representation and other services from the Association as may be determined by the National Council.

Applicants can fill out the online Associate Membership Application Form below or alternatively download the PDF application form at the bottom of this page and return it using the contact details provided.

Career Break for NCHDs/Associate Members

Doctors who are considering Associate Membership should also assess whether they need to take steps to protect their superannuation status by applying for a career break where they intend to travel abroad or work in the private sector for the purpose of furthering their specialist training.
