Living and Working in Ireland
Moving to Ireland - Consultant Relocation Support
Relocating to Ireland as a hospital consultant brings both exciting opportunities and important administrative steps. The IHCA is committed to helping incoming consultants settle in smoothly. Below is a guide to the essential processes and how we can assist you.
Premier Banking with Bank of Ireland
The Association has partnered with Bank of Ireland to ensure that doctors moving to Ireland can open a bank account in advance of their move. Bank of Ireland also offers a bespoke Mortgage Application Service for Consultants which takes account of their specific circumstances, including, for example, Consultants moving or returning to Ireland from abroad who may not have a demonstrable record of consistent savings in the jurisdiction. For further details, please see here.
Registration, Work Permits & Visas
Consultants must register with the Irish Medical Council, either via the Specialist Division or the Register of Medical Practitioners, depending on their credentials.
If applicable, IHCA can advise on work permit and visa requirements for non-EEA nationals.
We guide new members through compliance with Irish regulatory standards, assisting with documentation and timelines.
Finding Accommodation & Settling In
Securing housing, either long-term or short-term, is often one of the biggest challenges when relocating.
IHCA can provide you with regional contacts, advice on local areas near hospitals, and recommended agents or listings.
We also supply guidance on utilities, tenancy rights, and navigating the Irish rental market.
PPS Number, Bank Accounts & Tax Matters
Obtaining your PPS (Personal Public Service) number early is essential for employment, taxation, and public services.
You’ll need an Irish bank account for salary payments: we provide recommended banking partners and required documents.
Our guidance covers tax registration and the Irish revenue process, so you understand local obligations and entitlements.
IHCA Support & Welcome
As soon as you join, IHCA will assign you a contact in our Secretariat to assist with your move, paperwork, membership onboarding, and integration into consultant life in Ireland.
We maintain a “Moving to Ireland” resource page with up-to-date links and checklists to keep you informed.
If needed, we can connect you with existing members in your hospital or region to help you build a local network quickly.
