IHCA repeats call for protection of civilians and health workers in Gaza
“The Irish Hospital Consultants Association (IHCA) has repeated its calls to protect the safety of civilians and health workers in Gaza, following latest reports of a risk of famine with the deliberate withholding of humanitarian aid, including food, in the ongoing 11-week blockade of the region.
“The latest food security analysis released by the Integrated Food Security Phase Classification (IPC) partnership, of which World Health Organization (WHO) is a member, identified that three quarters of Gaza’s population are at ‘Emergency’ or ‘Catastrophic’ food deprivation, the worst two levels of food insecurity and nutritional deprivation. The United Nations has estimated 14,000 babies could die within days if lorries of aid do not immediately reach the population of Gaza.
“The IHCA reiterates its calls for an immediate ceasefire in the region and for a lasting meaningful, peaceful solution to the conflict. We also echo the persistent calls from the WHO and other health organisations across the globe that healthcare facilities, workers and patients should be off limits during armed conflicts.
“The Gaza health authorities report that the Indonesian Hospital in the north of the Strip was attacked on Monday, damaging electrical generators and forcing the facility to suspend services.
“Any assaults on healthcare facilities and those dedicated to saving lives are deeply distressing. Doctors, nurses, and all healthcare workers must be able to provide care to their patients free from the threat of violence, and those responsible for targeting healthcare professionals and facilities must be held accountable.”
